The Batter’s Eye: Angels in the Outfield

Janet Leigh, Donna Corcoran and Paul Douglas in Angels in the Outfield

Guffy McGovern is the cranky, foul-mouthed manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are facing a bad losing streak. An angel promises him the team will start winning if Guffy cleans up his act (and mouth). With the help of a kind-hearted reporter, Jennifer, and a cute orphan, Bridget, Guffy learns the true meaning of baseball and of life.

The Batter’s Eye: The Jackie Robinson Story

A still from The Jackie Robinson Story

At less than 80 minutes, The Jackie Robinson Story (1950, directed by Alfred E. Green) isn’t going to be a comprehensive biography. His early life is covered in broad strokes before the movie makes it to the pivotal point where he was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers’ farm team.

The Batter’s Eye: Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly in Take Me Out to the Ball Game

I’m not sure how this movie is as boring as it is. Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949, directed by Busby Berkeley) stars Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Esther Williams. It’s a musical about baseball! It should work but it does not. The […]

The Batter’s Eye: It Happens Every Spring

Paul Douglas and Ray Milland in It Happens Every Spring

Vernon (Ray Milland) is a chemist and baseball superfan. He accidentally creates a chemical that repels wood, so he coats a baseball in it and lies his way onto the St. Louis team as a pitcher, and cheats his way to a World Series win.

The Batter’s Eye: The Pride of the Yankees

A still from The Pride of the Yankees

We all know how this story ends, even if we don’t know the details. Released not that long after Lou Gehrig died, The Pride of the Yankees (1942, directed by Sam Wood) is less of a biopic and more of a tribute.

One of my gifts is randomly finding four-leaf clovers without really trying. Or in this case, a five-leaf clover. It's 1975 night! No real reason for this. We'll just pretend 1975 wasn't 50 years ago or anything so we don't feel old. -The Cure: Standing on the Beach: The Singles Madonna - Madonna OK, this might be the last batch of Diana photos from Michigan. There may be one or two more that are good but this tends to cover all of best ones. More photos from my Diana. No editing other than to crop into squares. Diana photos from Michigan. I have more but I liked these the best. I had 48 possible shots and I would say about 35 turned out decently. I am still learning this camera and the overcast weather had me worried but I'm really pleased. -Japanese Breakfast - For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) I guess if they fail to put your bag on your plane, it's better on the return trip.
